“The aim of yoga is to calm the chaos of conflicting impulses.” – B.K.S. Iyengar
At The Yoga Place, we offer a variety of classes to accommodate students of all ages, levels of experience and abilities. Classes are taught in the Iyengar method, which emphasizes proper body alignment and a balance between flexibility, strength, endurance and relaxation. Instructors frequently use props, including blocks, blankets, belts and chairs to make yoga poses accessible for all students.
If you have had a recent injury, or are unsure about which class is appropriate for you, feel free to call or email us for advice.
For those new to yoga or new to the Iyengar method of yoga. These classes emphasize the basic principles of alignment in all the poses. They concentrate on standing postures, though some seated and gentle back bending postures are introduced as well. Shoulderstand or an appropriate substitution or modification is also taught in Level I. Many students take Level I for several sessions as the class is challenging for all levels of ability. The poses in Level I will help students develop strength, flexibility, balance, and stamina while cultivating discipline, courage, and sensitivity to their individual needs.
Continuing Level I
For those students who have taken at least one full session of Level I and wish to work on refinement of the poses done in Level I. This level is also for students who would like a class to help them transition to a Level II class.
An ongoing class for students with a good understanding and practice of the Level I poses. Basic standing postures are refined, more complex standing postures and seated twists, more forward bends, and more backbends are introduced. Students going into this class should be comfortable with shoulderstand. Headstand or an appropriate substitution will be added.
Level ll / lll
A combination of Level II and Level III. Students should be strong in standing poses and practicing shoulderstand with ease. Inversions, including headstand or an appropriate substitution, backbends, seated twists, forward bends, and some arm balancing poses will be done in this class.
A class for serious students of yoga who have had at least one year of steady Iyengar style yoga practice (or by permission of the instructor). All poses learned so far will be done with more refinement and more advanced asanas will be introduced. Students should be able to hold shoulderstand and headstand for 5 minutes as variations of these poses will be practiced.
Ageless Yoga Level I
For those who wish to increase their flexibility and strength and reduce stress through yoga but who may have some physical limitations or require a less strenuous class.
Ageless Yoga Level II
For students who have previously taken Ageless classes and want to progress further or seek a more challenging class. This class is also for students who have taken regular level I, II, or III classes and want to continue practicing inversions and other challenging poses, but who need to slow down a little or use more support. Shoulderstand and possibly headstand or a supported variation in the ropes will be introduced. Not recommended for those who have no previous yoga experience.
