For March Study – Yoga of Action!
Our next Yoga Sutra discussion will be Sunday, March 22, at 11am. We will be reading the first three sutras in the second chapter – Sadhana Pada.
For navigation purposes, whatever translation you might have purchased for the discussion group, you will want to look for the second chapter which is the chapter “on practice”. Each sutra for reading will be identified by the chapter number (right now II) and the sutra number (1, 2, 3, etc…). Sadhana is translated as disciplined practice and so depending on your translation choice, you might have a chapter of a longer title in English or just the Sanskrit title. Pada is translated as “chapter” when it has a long first “a”. Some of you also know it as “foot” in relation to asanas, but that is without a long “a”. You will have to forgive my inability to add diacritical marks in this blog.
For Reading:
- Yoga Sutra II.1 – The definition of Kriya Yoga, the “yoga of action”.
- Yoga Sutra II.2 – what the effect of Kriya Yoga might be
- Yoga Sutra II.3 – the obstacles (klesas) you might encounter along the path of yoga
For Contemplation:
- Is there one of the three aspects of Kriya Yoga that you are drawn to more than another? Why?
- Can you see how there might be a balance to the three aspects of Kriya Yoga? How might you incorporate the other two into practice/life that seem weaker than the one you identify with most?
- Can you identify certain areas of your life or practice where each of the five obstacles (klesas) show up ?
- Has your practice of yoga diminished any of the obstacles that you identify with or can you see how your practice might lead to diminishing those obstacles?
Each of the obstacles will be parsed out in more detail in the next meetings, so you just need to gain a general understanding of the balance of the three aspects of Kriya Yoga and know that the obstacles exist and are accounted for when we begin our journey into yoga.
